Hydogren gas formation by the radiolysis of solid wastes is an important issue for the posibility of explosion. Not only water molecules, but also hydrates and hydroxides should be the sources of hydrogen gas by radiolysis but basic knowledge on the yields or production mechanisms have not been elucidated. Understanding of production mechanisms of hydrogen gas by radiolysis from hydrates and hydroxides is very important for safe treatment of solid radioactive wastes. In this study we have examined the yields of molecular hydrogen from gamma-ray irradiated several hydrates and hydroxides and consider the formation mechanisms. The yields were higher from hydrates and hydroxides including Ca and Mg ions. Strength of hydrogen bonds and redox of positive ions are likely to important factors of the yields.
