Uranyl ion exceptionally prefers planar pentacoordination in its equatorial plane, which is rarely found in other metal ions. Based on such a uniqueness of uranyl coordination chemistry, we designed fundamental molecular structure of a planar pentadentate ligand, and prepared its uranyl complex to start development of advanced adsorbent for uranium recovery from seawater.
