The precise control and the weakness against environmental corrosion of the fiber/matrix interphase materials are bothering the SiC composite industry. To overcome these problems, the C/BN particle dispersed SiC composites without interphase materials have been developed and displayed promising prospect in nuclear applications. Here in this study, to evaluate their irradiation resistance, SiC-20vol%C/BN materials fabricated by liquid-phase sintering were subjected to irradiation damage of 0.1/1/3/100 dpa at 300 °C by 5.1 MeV Si2+ ions in DuET, Kyoto University. It is confirmed that the extra swelling of SiC-20vol%C/BN materials over CVD-SiC is contributed by the swelling of the sintering additives. More results of SEM, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy on microstructural response to irradiation will be reported.
