Authors have been developing a framework for a rational seismic design system which considers both of uncertainties of natural external hazards and the concept of defense-in-depth. The major objectives of the framework are 1) obtaining a balanced risk profile related to CDF and 2) confirming robustness against seismic events based on Japanese seismic environment. This paper describes important characteristics of the proposed framework and case study results regarding robustness against seismic motions utilizing seismic design and seismic isolation system.
