Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry is developing accident tolerant control rods as one of the measures to improve the safety and economy of light water reactors. Compatibility test was conducted between the novel neutron absorbing materials, composed of rare earth sesquioxide with zirconia or hafnia, and the core structural materials (Zry-4, FeCrAl, Fe, SUS304, SUS304-Zry4, B4C, SUS304-B4C, and Ag-In) in the temperature range of 1600 ° C to 2000 ° C. As a result, It was suggested that a certain amount of novel neutron absorbing material loaded in the ATF cladding may remain in solid phase until the early stages of a severe accident.
