Keywords:liquid blanket, LiPb breeder/coolant, anti-corrosion, electrical insulation, tritium permeation reduction

In a design study of advanced liquid blanket systems with a LiPb breeder/coolant, material compatibility is one of the most critical issues directly affecting the lifetime. To eliminate the issue, application of Al-contained steels at high-temperature and high-velocity parts in breeder/coolant channels has been proposed in the design study, since the steels can produce anti-corrosion aluminum oxide surface layers. Moreover, the aluminum oxide surface layers could have functions as electrical insulating layers for suppression of MHD pressure drop in a LiPb flow under intense magnetic fields and permeation reduction layers for tritium fuel. The possibility to solve these design issues simultaneously by applying Al-contained steels is being investigated.
