Geopolymer is a group of newly derived barrier materials for the stabilization of radioactive wastes. In this study, sodium activated and metakaolin-based geopolymer (Na-MKGP) was investigated to understand its sorption mechanisms for cesium (Cs+) and europium (Eu3+). The sorption of these ions was studied as a function of pH and different background salt concentrations. Furthermore, the sorption of Eu3+ was studied by time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) to reveal the speciation of Eu3+ with Na-MKGP.
