As a means of effective utilization of spent nuclear fuel from light water reactors, its use as a radiation battery is considered. In this study, we investigated a direct conversion type radiation cell, which has a long life, simple shape, and can be easily miniaturized. In this system, the kinetic energy of electrons obtained from radiation (β- and γ-rays) is directly converted into potential energy by an electric field to generate electricity.
In this study, we selected useful radiation sources in the spent fuel, and investigated the specifications and evaluated the performance of the radiation battery using β- and γ-rays to maximize the conversion efficiency and electrical output.
