As a part of the safety assessment of a disposal facility for low-level radioactive waste, the decomposition rate of bitumen (asphalt) in the presence of microorganisms in soil (in rocks) was determined to be less than 1 g/m2/y, in addition to the cold and alkaline field environment. The microbial flora before and after the degradation test were also compared, and the predominance of cold- and alkaline-resistant microorganisms was observed.
