[3B06] Development of Directional 14 MeV-Fusion Neutron Detector using Liquid Scintillator Filled in Capillaries

The space and time behavior of 14 MeV neutron is measured to predict the behavior of α particles in fusion experiment devices by means of scintillating optical fiber (Sci.Fi.) detectors and stilbene detectors as fast-neutron detectors. While Sci.Fi. detectors are directional to γ-rays and neutrons, stilbene detectors and organic liquid scintillator detectors can discriminate between γ-rays and neutrons based on pulse shape discrimination method, a new detector with both advantageous properties has been desired. For that purpose, we have been developing the directional neutron detector based on organic liquid scintillator filled in capillaries. Fundamental studies using sealed γ-ray sources and a 252Cf neutron source have demonstrated its possibility. Further studies will be conducted with a 14 MeV neutron source.
