Hilly residential areas in Nagasaki city have issues provoked by the complex street structure with steep slopes and staircases that affect urban planning and daily lives of local residents due to its low accessibility. Thus, this paper provides a method of evaluation and improvement plans to increase accessibility, which contribute to the actual urban planning for sustainable development. More specifically, first, we measure the duration between origin and destination for various movement patterns in street network systems, including topography, age-group and means of transportation as accessibility indices to classify disparities caused by factors such as differences in walking ability between non-elderly and elderly. Second, the study estimates changes in accessibility with the facing future aging population. Furthermore, we propose improvement plans as well as verifying the effects based on results of current condition analysis.
