[86] An Empirical Analysis on the Relationship between Awareness of Tsunami Hazard Risk and Housing Choice, Travel Mode

This study focuses on the city where the majority of the city’s downtown is estimated to be tsunami inundated area and aims to verify the hypothesis that residents having high awareness of tsunami hazard risk tend to live in inconvenient suburbs outside of the risk and to depend on cars.
To do this, the questionnaire survey about living fact, awareness of tsunami hazard risk, and usual travel mode was implemented in Kochi city. The hypothesis was supported by the analysis based on the data. The quantitative analysis showed that the percentage of individuals who live in more suburb area than before for safety reason was 28% higher than those who living not for the reason.
