The government is promoting compact city with multipolar networks as a policy. To achieve this, the relationship between residential relocation and characteristics of residential zones should be clarified. Decisions to change residence affect households, and are affected by life stage changes, and residential relocation awareness varies by the life stage. The objective of this study is to clarify the past residential relocation pattern by classifying residential zone types and the preference to select living area of each life stage type all over Japan. The residential zone types could be classified by using the national person trip survey and ordinally analyzed data of residential zoned characteristics. The results show that the past relocation patterns of residential zone types are not necessarily suited to the preference in some life stages such as young single household and household after independent of children.
