Keywords:Colonist City, Grid urban area, Temple, Urban reorganization, Relocation
Many urban areas of Hokkaido constructed in the Meiji era were constructed in an extremely planned manner. However, the respective methods of expanding each urban area were unique. Temples were relocated in the midst of this urban reorganization. In other words, it is considered that urban expansion in Hokkaido was carried out through a process of “second design”. In this study, we elucidate the method of temple relocation, and clarified the actual state in which that peculiar landscape was created. For example, in Yoichi, the urban area was expanded, adjoining to the modern city. At this time, the existing temples, due to the intention of the early Meiji administrative unit, were moved to the side of the road outside the new city. In Hokkaido cities, temples with their respective characteristics were relocated based on the state of each period landscape, institutional landscape, and urban expansion and their unique landscapes continue until this day.
