Keywords:Tenjin, market and commercial space, Shintencho shopping street, Yanagibashi union market, Triangle market
The center of the Fukuoka City is composed of the Fukuoka and Hakata areas. The former is a samurai estate west of the Nakagawa River, whereas the latter is a merchant district east of the Nakagawa River. The Tenjin area, which was destroyed in an air strike in 1945, is today the downtown core of Fukuoka. This paper focuses on small and middle-size markets and commercial spaces that formed the center of the Fukuoka City before and after the war. Then, it clarifies how their space changed after the war. Thus, among many markets and commercial spaces, this paper focuses on Shintencho shotengai (Shintencho shopping street), Yanagibashi-rengo-Ichiba (Yanagibashi united market), and Sankaku-Ichiba (Triangle market). These spaces played an important role in the development of the Tenjin area.
