[1] Greenery in Scenic Landscape Depicted in Picture Postcards of Nara Park and its Role in Landscape Formation
Keywords:Nara Park, scenic landscapes, Greenery, picture postcards
This study aims to determine characteristics of greenery, a component of scenic landscape in Nara Park, and to explore role of greenery in landscape formation by using picture postcards of the park dating back to a period from 1890s to 1960s. It was found that the greenery was largely divided into two groups; greenery serving as a main component of scenic beauty and the other one supporting other main subject, such as historical construct and an approach to a shrine or temple. In the former group, prominent trees, big trees and vast grass fields blend perfectly with another main component of scenic beauty, or historical construction and deer, leading to the expression of a historical or cultural asset unique to the park and the naturalness. In the latter group, vegetation played a powerful role in producing a sense of the season, perspective emphasis and historical atmosphere, as well as giving a well-balanced structure to the backdrop.
