[9] Study on the Operation of Preservation and the Characteristics of Retail Shops in Historical Villages as Tourist Area

The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship operation of preservation and utilization related to historical villages and the characteristics of retail shops for tourist through a case study of Tsumago-juku, Narai-juku, and Unno-juku in Nagano prefecture. Changes in retail shops were observed along with preservation policies and efforts of utilization for historical village. The results are as following; 1) the method and the scale of utilization depend on the intensity of preservation; 2) Preservation policies in historical villages have influenced transition of retail shops. In order to sustainably operate historic villages as tourist destination, it is necessary not only to preserve them but also to establish a flexible system to utilize historic resources.
