[202] The Use of Public Space in Early Modern Genre Paintings

This study aims to explore how activities were depicted in early modern genre paintings in Kyoto, shedding light on the interplay between activities and public spaces. The study categorizes activities into five types: peddler/teahouse, event/gathering, transportation, entertainment/show, and others. Street spaces were found to serve multiple purposes beyond transportation, acting as sites for activities like peddlers and entertainment. The activities surrounding famous spots like watersides and temples revealed the influence of specific cultural traits associated with those places.
