Keywords:GPS log data, Activity space, COVID-19, Weighted Confidence Ellipse, Changing pattern of daily activities
It is important to understand the changing pattern of people’s daily activities before and after the COVID-19 pandemic in order to achieve effective city planning in the post-COVID era. In this study, weighted confidence ellipses were generated as activity spaces to understand the reality of people’s daily activity in Ibaraki Prefecture, based on GPS data (n=1,492,332 person-days) acquired from a smartphone application from April 2017 to April 2021. Additionally, the relationship between the place of stay and land use was examined. When all activity spaces were clustered based on area, eccentricity, and diversity, it was found that during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the number of outings people had, duration of their stay, and spatial extent of the places where they stayed differed significantly.
