[149] Patterns of change in commuting transportation composition by municipality and relationship to compact city policies
- A fundamental analysis based on the Census Data from 2000, 2010 and 2020
Keywords:Commuting transportation mode, Census, Location Normalization Plan, Regional Public Transportation Plan
Against the backdrop of declining population and super-aging society, planning systems based on compact city policies have been introduced to make urban management sustainable, and the number of municipalities that formulate these policies is increasing. One of the goals of compact city policies is to control motorization, but few studies have conducted detailed analyses of the progress of motorization in each municipality, making it difficult to evaluate the effects and challenges of compact city policies. This study analyzed the relationship between municipality characteristics and the pattern of change in transportation mode composition based on the Census data from 2000, 2010, and 2020. As a result, the study did not show a trend that compact city policy efforts contribute to the suppression of motorization, but it did provide basic findings for future planning and institutional improvements.
