Background: Besides COVID-19, dementia is an essential and urgent worldwide public health problem . According to WHO’s data, almost 50 million people in the earth have dementia. Dementia leads to increased costs for governments, communities, families and individuals, and to loss in productivity for economies. There exists non-modifiable risk factors for dementia include age, gene polymorphisms, gender, race and family history, and modifiable risk factors such as educational attainment, lifestyle-related risk factors, such as physical inactivity, tobacco use, unhealthy diets and harmful use of alcohol, certain medical conditions, social isolation and cognitive inactivity. Nevertheless, recent years, more studies show oral health plays an important role in dementia. We investigated the oral health condition and medical expenses in dementia population.
Methods: This case-control study based on the data from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Patients were divided into two groups: the dementia groups and non-dementia group. Each individual in the dementia group was randomly selected and frequency matched with the non-dementia group by age and sex. We define the day of the patients diagnosed with dementia was index day and the baseline. The outpatient and the inpatient were analyzed separately. The dental and total medical expenses were evaluated. The oral health condition was also evaluated. The Research Ethics Committee of China Medical University and Hospital in Taiwan approved the study (CMUH-104-REC2-115-R3).
Results: The medical expenses of dementia group were higher . The dental expenses of the outpatient group are lower than the inpatient group both in the dementia group and the non-demential group. There are less tooth loss in non-dementia group.
Conclusion: The medical expenses especially dental expenditures were higher in the dementia group than the non-dementia group. Non-dementia group showed good oral condition with less tooth loss than dementia group.
