[SY3-3] Intervention effects on oral hypofunction and oral dysfunction in older adults

Dr. Matsuo earned both D.D.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan. He has been in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Johns Hopkins University as a post-doctoral research fellow and an assistant professor for 6 years (2002-08). He was back to Japan in 2008, and has appointed to current position since 2021.
His clinical interests include geriatric dentistry for frail elderly individuals having physical disabilities, systemic diseases, and/or feeding difficulties. His recent research has focused on oral health managements in hospitalized individuals and fundamental understanding of physiology and pathophysiology of mastication and swallowing.
Eating is one of essential human digestive function but also the joy of living left till the end of our life. Thus, supporting proper oral eating function would lead to maintain or improve patients’ quality of life in super aged society. Eating function is significantly influenced by oral health condition, especially in frail older individuals. Oral health including hygiene and function gradually declines with aging and is easily deteriorated with accumulated diseases. Poor masticatory performance derived from deteriorated oral function increases the risk of malnutrition or choking and poor oral hygiene is one of causes of aspiration pneumonia in those patients. Recent studies also revealed that declined oral functions were associated with systemic frailty and declined ADL. Thus, preventing deterioration of oral health and eating function is essential for older individuals to live longer healthy life. In my presentation, I will talk the effects of oral intervention program on oral hypofunction in community dwelling older adults and dental intervention on oral dysfunction in patients with subacute stroke.
