[R2P-05] Synthesis and luminescence of Ce-doped merrillite

Natural minerals of apatite and merrillite act as the host crystals for the rare earth elements. Recently, we have synthesized the compound Ca₉Ce(PO₄)₇ by using solid state reaction. The measurements of photoluminescence and XAFS clearly indicate that the included Ce is trivalent state. In addition, as a result of single crystal structure analysis, the merrillite-type structure Ca₉Ce(PO₄)₇ (R3c; a=10.500 (2), c=7.564 (4)) was confirmed.
