This session brings together papers that analyze the complex and non-linear change dynamics in socioecological systems from an earth system viewpoint.
Socioecological systems are typically complex and dynamic, and they undergo change continually. Although such systems combine both natural and human components, in recent years socioecological systems have been adversely affected by human action, large scale change in land use and land cover and demographic patterns-resulting in loss of resilience, sudden transition in ecosystem properties and decline in ecosystem services for local societies. This international session will feature case studies on wetlands, forests, watersheds, and different types of social ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS). Such landscapes and their ecosystem services have come under focus in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) as well as a range of international initiatives, but their relationship with abiotic processes, and the integrity of the earth system properties have remained underexplored. This session will explore such relationships through oral papers and poster presentations?and analyze how change and complexity of planetary processes are fundamentally related to ecosystsemic and human well-being.
