[M-IS18] Marine manganese deposits: Origin, growth processes, and environments

Tue. May 24, 2016 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM 304 (3F)

Convener:*Akira Usui(Dept, Natural Science), Yoshio Takahashi(Department of Earth and Planetary Science, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo), Katsuhiko Suzuki(Research and Development Center for Submarine Resources, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology), Chair:Akira Usui(Dept, Natural Science), Takashi Ito(Faculty of Education, Ibaraki University), Katsuhiko Suzuki(Research and Development Center for Submarine Resources, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology)

The ocean ferromanganese deposits are integrated precipitates of hydrogenetic iron and manganese oxide minerals with enrichment of minor useful metal elements. The recent exploration of the deposits using ROV mapping and deep-sea drill provide us with new findings on mineralogy, geochemistry, microbiology, and physical engineering. The session reports the results of munti-disciplinary, multi-institutional investigation of origin, growth process, resource potential of hydrogenetic and diagenetic ferromanganese nodules and crusts in the Northwestern Pacific oceans
