[M-IS34] The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake and related crustal activities
Thu. May 26, 2016 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM
Poster Hall (International Exhibition Hall HALL6)
An earthquake of M 7.3 occurred on 16 April, accompanied by a foreshock of M 6.5 two days before, many aftershocks and landslides in Kumamoto and Ooita Prefectures, Kyushu island, southwestern Japan. The earthquakes were located along the Futagawa and Hinagu fault zones in the Beppu-Shimabara graben, generating strong ground motion and surface faults near the epicenter. It resulted in many fatalities and severe damages of constructions. Seismic activities were simultaneously activated in the other area, Aso and Beppu, along the graben.
This session purposes to share information of preliminary surveys and analysis of the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake and related crustal activities for further studies. We would like to also discuss lessons learned from the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake for disaster prevention and mitigation. We welcome presentations from a broad range of fields, such as seismology, geodesy, geology, geography, earth dynamics, and disaster research.
