“Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs hereafter)” is the international goals adopted in the Sustainable Development Summit on the United Nations (UN hereafter) held in September 2015. The plan sets 17 Goals to transform our world and 193 countries / region acceded in UN should achieve these goals by 2030. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) had set for developing countries but SDGs involves advanced countries.
17 Goals consist 169 targets and some of targets are has strong relationship to Geopark activities; e.g., 8.9 “By 2030, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products and 13.1”Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries”. SDGs includes other targets about treatment of (natural) disasters, climate change, conservation of natural environment and maintenance of local societies by economical activities with sustainable manner, which indicates Geopark activities are able to contribute to achievement of SDGs.
It is significant that stakeholders in a management body of each UNESCO Global Geopark realize the link SDGs to actual Geopark activities carrying out in the area because the linkage between Geopark activities and SDGs may be included in the evaluation / revalidation in those of UNESCO Global Geoparks in the future. In the poster, we discuss what do geopark activities contribute to SDGs through showing linkage about SDGs to Geopark activities in Unzen Volcanic Area UNESCO Global Geoparks.
