[SSS08-03] A Historical Record on the 1707 Hoei Earthquake and Hoei Eruption of Mt. Fuji: Tozan-Hongu-Ki Recording the 1703 Genroku Earthquake, 1707 Hoei Earthquake, and 1707 Hoei Eruption of Mt. Fuji

The damage in Omiya (Fujinomiya) and its surrounding area, located in the coastal area of Suruga Bay, by the 1703 Genroku Earthquake, 1707 Hoei Earthquake (on October 28), the large aftershock (at about 6 on October 29) and 1707 Hoei Eruption of Mt. Fuji and was mentioned in historical record as "Large earthquake and eruption of Mt. Fuji", which has been reprinted in the book entitled "Collection of Sengen Documents". In the reprint of "Large earthquake and eruption of Mt. Fuji", letters about the 1703 Genroku Earthquake and the date and time of the large aftershock of the 1707 Hoei Earthquake have been lost in the text.
One of the objects in this study is "Tozan-Hongu-Ki", which mentions the 1703 Genroku Earthquake, 1707 Hoei Earthquake and 1707 Hoei Eruption of Mt. Fuji. This document has been reprinted dividedly in "New Collection of Materials for the History of Japanese Earthquakes", except the part about 1707 Hoei Eruption of Mt. Fuji. The damage by the 1703 Genroku Earthquake was not recorded in "Tozan-Hongu-Ki", which implies that there was no major damage in Omiya. According to "Tozan-Hongu-Ki" the date of the 1707 Hoei Earthquake is November 27, while it is October 28 in "Large earthquake and eruption of Mt. Fuji", probably because "Tozan-Hongu-Ki" was copied in 1876 (more than 170 after the 1707 Hoei Earthquake) and it is not an original record.
"Tozan-Tosha-No-Denki" and its copy have been owned by Tenri Central Library. In addition, one of the original sources of the 1707 Hoei Earthquake has been owned by Fujisan-Hongu-Sengen Shrine. From these documents, it is estimated that the discrepancy in the dates happened when one writer copied "Tozan-Tosha-No-Denki" and another writer copied an (undiscovered) original record. It is also estimated that people in Omiya felt the 1707 Hoei Earthquake at about 16 on October 28 while the time of the next morning of aftershock was about 8.
