We will present a preliminary result of a questionnaire survey that we have conducted in 2017 targeting 77 experts of volcanology to investigate their activities in volcanic disaster councils organized by local governments around 48 active volcanoes. This survey was conducted as a mission of the Commission on Mitigation of Volcanic Disasters of The Volcanological Society of Japan. We sent the questionnaire to the experts via e-mail and 73 experts replied so far (response rate: 95%). The specialties of many of the experts are geophysics, geology, and sabo (erosion control) engineering, and 46% of the experts are sixty years old or older. More than a third of the experts are involved in more than three councils. They advise not only on the preparedness before volcanic eruptions, which is prescribed in the Revised Act on Special Measures Concerning Active Volcanoes, but also on the activities during volcanic crises and educational outreach efforts.
