Magma transport system beneath volcanoes is a key to understand long-term geodynamics and the evolution of the Earth. Especially, deep long-period earthquakes around the Moho beneath active volcanoes are supposed to relate to the magma transport system, although their activities and mechanisms are not understood well. Revealing the role of deep long-period earthquakes in the magma transport system is a key to understand deep volcanic roots around the lower crust, including deep magma chambers. It is therefore essential to estimate complete seismicity with a high-resolution hypocenter distribution and focal mechanisms of deep long-period earthquakes, based on innovative techniques including template matching, relocation methods using waveform cross-correlations, and waveform inversions. Also, high-resolution seismic imaging using advanced tomography techniques, including tomography using ambient noise interferometry, with a dense seismic network is essential to visualize the magma transport system. We welcome studies to understand volcanic roots from a variety of seismological approaches including but not limited to the methods mentioned above.
