International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) is one of the 40 unions in the International Science Council (ISC), celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019. IUGG promotes and coordinates research on the interior and the periphery of the Earth. The IUGG has associations of eight research fields (IACS, IAG, IAGA, IAHS, IAMAS, IAPSO, IASPEI, and IAVCEI), which carry out semi-autonomously activities in cooperation with each other. In addition, IUGG encourages research to respond to social needs such as reduction of natural disasters and environmental conservation. The IUGG Subcommittee at the Japan Science Council's Earth and Planetary Science Committee and the eight association-committees under the former serve as representatives of Japan for the IUGG and 8 Associations.
In this session, as IUGG celebrates its 100th anniversary, researchers related to each association exchange the ideas on the role of IUGG in earth science and the contribution that Japanese researchers should make to IUGG.
