The Japan Oceanographic Society (JOS) has organized a series of visiting lectures on marine science, called “Umi-no-Demae-Jyugyo”, to enhance basic understanding of marine science and its fundamental role in socio-economic activity. Since 2016, 18 lectures have been performed at primary-high schools and public offices in Japan by the JOS registered professors and researchers. The topics of visiting lectures widely range upon request from basic marine science to cutting-edge marine science and technology, targeting at primary-high school children and teachers, etc. In 2018, the JOS has initiated a cross-sectoral collaboration with the Japan Science Society (JSS) to jointly support their activity on visiting lectures, so called Cubic Earth. The Cubit Earth, a virtual Earth having a cubic shape, involves complex ocean and atmosphere interaction system, but through comparison with the real Earth system, one can obtain deep insights into how the Earth’s environment has been developed into highly-diverse but stable system suitable for evolution of human beings. So far, two lectures on the Cubic Earth have been performed at high schools. This presentation aims to widely share examples of the performed lectures and key lessons learned from those lectures in order to raise awareness about significance of marine science among school teachers and children who join the JpGU meeting.
