[MGI37-P01] Publication of georeferenced polygon data to make JMA XML machine-readable

Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has developed an XML format to structurized replacement for traditional plain text bulletins in Japanese text (Kana-Kanji messages) used for alerting messages such as warnings and advisories. The JMA's XML format reduced ad-hoc parsing work of plain text, while the geolocation remained as issue. Messages issued for fixed geographical areas (like prefectures or municipalities) contain only code for the areas, and users had to prepare polygon data by the area's name for visualization.
January 2019, JMA published georeferenced polygon data (in shapefiles). Challenges will be presented during the session, including the selection of horizontal resolution and the clarification of geographical areas. JMA expects the polygon data expands the utilization of JMA's XML messages in other formats or in conjunction with other geospatial information.
