Recent progress in isotope dendrochronology makes it possible to precisely reconstruct summer precipitation at an annual resolution, enabling us to study the relationship between climate changes and societal responses in the past. Our earlier study revealed that rice yields estimated from historical documents in several villages near Lake Biwa suffered from frequent flood events, which were reconstructed from tree rings. In the present study, we explore how climate changes affected governmental system of tax collection in the early modern period in Japan, by comparing the methods in tax collection between two local loads of central Japan.
