Coastal topography and tsunami deposits caused by trench type earthquakes can be clearly observed around the Kuril subduction zone, eastern Hokkaido. We conducted a geological excursion on the theme of geological phenomena caused by giant earthquakes, which can be participated by local citizens on September 3-4, 2018 as a related event of the 125th annual scientific congress of the Geological Society of Japan in Sapporo. In this excursion, we taught that future disasters can be predicted based on the past information from strata and topography recorded during the past several thousand years. And these are useful for teaching materials for students. We also hope that local citizens will consider future giant earthquake and tsunamis and disaster prevention using peel specimens of tsunami deposits for local museums, etc.
