[MAG39-P02] GANSEKI: Long-Term Strategy of JAMSTEC Deep Seafloor Rock Sample Curation

More than 10 years have passed since Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) started the curatorial management of observation data and samples under the current JAMSTEC Data Policy [1]. This means that some of them have aged more than their minimum storage periods that are defined as 10 years. JAMSTEC Rock Sample curation is now passing one of the milestones for sustainable sample management.
JAMSTEC Rock Sample Curation has been continuously changed since it was established. As for the sample storage, JAMSTEC has come to equip fixed rock sample storage rooms in 2019, after repeated (re-)installations of mobile storage containers for every 1~2 years, however they are still considered as temporary storages. It is under planning to acquire a sample storage building, that is supposed to be the permanent rock sample storage. Some efforts, such as reduce of individual sample volumes, will become inevitable within next several years to make enough room for growing sample collections. As for the data management, the rock sample database “GANSEKI" has experienced several updates and the user-side interface was integrated into the DARWIN database [2] on 2017. Its management-side system is under remodeling for integrating databases for rock, sediment core and biological samples into one system. The variation of publishable data has been getting wider; geochemistry data, isochron ages, thin-section and closeup-texture photos, and literature information are currently publishable and more data types will be available in the future.
For years, JAMSTEC Rock Sample Curation has been operated only under JAMSTC Data Policy [1]. However, it will have to deal with the parallel existence of additional policy of JURCAOS-AORI-JAMSTEC Cooperative Research cruises [3], which will be enforced in 2019. In this presentation, the author will summarize the management history and current situations of JAMSTEC Rock Sample Curation, and discuss its future strategy.
