It is important for the general public to know the place where the natural disaster risk is high. Some geomorphic features are strongly relating to flood or debris flow and useful for understanding the risk. For example, alluvial cone is a highly possible place of debris flow. Geomorphic features have been formed by repetitive phenomena that cause rapid landform changes, i.e. natural disasters. Therefore, it is useful for disaster estimation to know the geomorphic features. The geomorphic survey can be done everywhere at low cost using topographic maps, digital elevation models and air-photos.
The geomorphic condition has been basic information of hazard mapping. Hazard maps, however, show very much simplified information. It is desirable that people can judge the disaster risk by themselves. For it, some kinds of geomorphological maps are available in big plains in Japan.
