Keywords:Hinagu fault zone, 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, paleoseismology, trenching survey

We conducted paleoseismic investigations such as drilling and trenching surveys across the Hinagu segment of the Hinagu fault zone, Kumamoto, Japan. The result based on the careful trench wall observation and preliminary radiocarbon dating of sediments show that paleoearthquake cycle of the Hinagu segment is shorter than previous evaluation of the fault.
