The National Museum of Nature and Science (NMNS) possesses three oil paintings describing the 1914 Sakurajima eruption. These oil paintings were drawn by “Nanto Omure” and “Kanehide Yamashita”. They were disciples of “Seiki Kuroda” who was an oil painter representing Japan. One of these was drawn at the request of Prof. Fusakichi Omori. The status immediately after eruption painted with oil paints is eloquent the violence of volcanic smokes and thunders.

These pictures originally were hung in the Seismological Institute of the Imperial University. Now, these pictures do not have the frame, and were incurred dirty or moldy due to deterioration over time. So we restored and framed these oil paintings. For people who aren’t unfamiliar with science, we would be happy if these oil paintings become interested in historical volcanic eruption as a work of art, rather than as an educational tool for science.
