“Large Scientific Research Projects” under national strategic perspectives naturally comprise multidisciplinary efforts of Japanese scientists, by aggregating cutting-edge technology and knowledge to tackle research issues that had yet to be explored by anyone and bringing about dramatic development of those fields. Such projects will continue to necessiate strategic, systematic promotion through a long-term outlook, while garnering the support and understanding of the general public and society overall. As to the earth and planetary sciences in Japan during the late 20th and early 21st centuries, most researches focused on individual fields, such as studies on atmosphere, ocean, surface environment, solid earth (plate, plume, geomagnetism etc.). Nonetheless, in the views from abroad, most of efforts appear to have been concentrated in transplanting ideas and technology from western communities without nurturing domestic original ones. Under the limited financial budget of Japan, there is one hopeful possibility in earth science, which enables multispheric system studies involving core, mantle, surface crust, biosphere, and outer space. The most advantageous estate in Japan is the “earth history samples” collected from various countries during the last 30 years bu Japanese earth scientists. As there is non-such analogue in the rest of the world, we should build a new project centered by a research center “Astro-Bioscience”, which promote intimate network with many countries centered in Japan in order to reveal the entire history of the Earth and life. This project is directly linked to the sustainability of our planet, to which all humans on the Earth are facing today.
