We, Geological Society of Japan, propose “Building of archive and curating system for astrogeoscience materials” for Master Plan 2020.
Approximately 150 years passed after foundation of modern science in Japan. The Japanese researchers collected great amounts of terrestrial samples and meteorites, from over the world as well as Japan, using national and private funds during this period. Natural history is traditionally regarded as important in European countries and USA, but it is neglected more or less in Japan. As a result, Japan is far behind the European countries and USA as regards the preservation of the samples for future work, and curating system of the samples.
However, many paradigms were born from the well-organized sample archive such as Burgess Shale collection for the Cambrian Explosion and recent discovery of deep-sea economic deposit, and so on.
In addition, social responsibility of science is often emphasized in many European courtiers and USA: Open access of scientific journals, data and original samples, and guarantee of reliability of original data. However, Japan is also far behind other countries including China regards the open access.
We would like to propose building of archive and curating system for astrogeoscience materials for the future works and social responsibility.
This program is proposed by Geological society of Japan, and supported by AIST (Geological survey of Japan), National Institute of Polar Research, National Museum of Nature and Science, JAMSTEC, Kanagawa Prefectural museum of Natural History, and departments of Earth and Planetary sciences of 28 universities.
