The International Association of Cryospheric Sciences, or IACS, is the eighth association of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), launched by the IUGG Council on 2007-07-04. Despite being the latest of the IUGG associations, IACS looks back on a history of 125 years, starting with the International Commission on Glaciers (Commission Internationale des Glaciers) founded in 1894. It then evolved via the International Commission of Snow and Ice (ICSI) of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) and the transitional Union Commission for the Cryospheric Sciences (UCCS) into its current constitution as an independent IUGG association, recognizing the increased importance of cryospheric sciences within the context of Global Change. In this presentation, we will outline the history of IACS and its precursor organizations, describe the current activities of IACS and highlight the Japanese links with IACS in the form of contributions to its governance, divisions and research activities.
