[U06-07] The role of IAHS in education, research, social issues concerning water and future perspective

IAHS (International Association of Hydrological Sciences) was launched in 1922, and now have approximately 5500 individuals, 10 commissions and 3 working groups. The Scientific Assembly is held every 4 years and held in Yokohama, Japan 1993. Professor in Emeritus Dr. Kuniyoshi Takeuchi, Yamanashi University has served as a president of IAHS from 2001 through 2005, thus Japan has taken an important role in IAHS.
The commission consists of Continental Erosion, Coupled Land-Atmosphere Systems, Groundwater, Remote Sensing, Statistical Hydrology, Snow and Ice Hydrology, Surface Water, Tracers, Water Quality, Water Resources Systems, and it covers a variety of field in hydrology. Also, a working group “PANTA RHEI –Change in Hydrology and Society” has been launched in 2013 focusing on changing hydrological cycle system with changing human system.
The Japan National Committee of IAHS in cooperation with Japan National Committee of IHP (International Hydrology Programme) hold a symposium “Japan Water 2012: International Contribution from Japan in education/ research of water science and technology”. Also, Japan Association of Hydrology and Water Resources, Japanese Association of Hydrological Sciences, Japanese Association of Groundwater Hydrology and Japan Society of Physical Hydrology collaborated to publish Hydrological Research Letters (HRL) since 2017. Additionally, IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) Regional Training Course on Isotopic Data Processing and Interpretation –Hands on Exercises is held in March 2019, Tsukuba, Japan supported by Japan National Committee of IAHS and Japan National Committee of IHP.
On the other hand, the changing environment in hydrology and water resources in Japan and the world requires the change of the role in IAHS. We need to promote a collaboration between IAHS and IHP, early career support and career paths developments in future.
