[H-CG32] Risk of Nuclear Technology and Geoscience: Dialogue with Engineers

We have organized sessions in the JpGU meeting on the risk of nuclear power utilization in Japan mainly from the point of view of geoscience since 2013. It has shed new light on various aspects of the risk of nuclear power related to earthquakes, volcanic activities and tsunamis. We have also repeatedly acknowledged the differences of standpoints between scientists and engineers on those risks. Last year, our panelists from earthquake science raised the issues centering on the risk of inland earthquakes on nuclear power station and its uncertainty. It is closely relevant to the recent decision of the nuclear regulatory agency (NRA) on the method of inland earthquake risk on nuclear power stations. Public debates on this issue is still on-going.
In the 2020 JpGU meeting, we propose the session to deepen the dialogue between scientists and engineers more. What should geoscience take the stance on the issue of scientific uncertainty and nuclear risk? How could scientist and engineers work together for public goods? We would especially encourage paper submission by engineers to make it fruitful. We are also welcome to papers of other topics relevant to relationship of earthquake science and nuclear power plants.
