[M-IS19] Conservation of geoparks, natural geosites, and cultural heritage: weathering and damage assessment
convener:Luigi Germinario(Saitama University), Celine Schneider(University of Reims-Champagne-Ardenne), Chiaki T. Oguchi(Institute for Environmental Science and Technology, Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saitama University), Tetsuya Waragai(Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Nihon University), Miguel Gomez-Heras(Universidad Autonoma de Madrid), Patricia Vazquez(GEGENAA EA 3795 University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne), Magdalini Theodoridou(Cardiff University), Wonsuh Song(Waseda University)
Geoparks, geosites, World Heritage Sites, and historical structures represent an important natural and/or cultural heritage. They have been exposed to weathering in the geological and human time scale, so that the rocks and other geological materials they are made of, may often face severe deterioration. In order to preserve those sites, conservation measures should be considered. Several studies were carried out on this topic, involving a wide range of research fields: geomorphology, engineering geology, geoarchaeology, conservation science, geoconservation, materials science, petrophysics, geochemistry, geotechnical engineering, etc. However, our knowledge on many aspects is still limited. This session welcomes contributions presenting original research, discussions, as well as case studies, on documentation, measurement and monitoring techniques, experimental procedures, predictive models, damage assessment, etc. Papers from all the research fields dealing with the broad topic of geosites and cultural heritage are invited.
