Atlantic Niño is the most significant interannual variability in the equatorial Atlantic, influencing the precipitation of Atlantic coastal countries and the global climate. Based on diagnosing observational datasets and conducting numerical experiments, we reinvestigated the mechanisms for the Atlantic Niño phase locking behavior (i.e., interannual SST variability maximum in boreal summer). Our results show that the ocean dynamic processes and atmospheric thermodynamics processes play pivotal role in controlling the seasonal phase-locking behavior of Atlantic Niño. The transition of the aforementioned dynamic and thermodynamic processes is further regulated by the seasonal cycle of background mean state.
