[G02-P05] Consideration on Education of Disaster Prevention Jointly Practiced with the Field

1. Background of the Study
The Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 was an unprecedented catastrophe. It triggered an increase in social demand for disaster prevention education. On the other hand, according to MEXT (2014), disaster prevention education has not been effectively performed in schools. Also, Nagamatsu and Oki (2015) revealed that many teachers are aware of the necessity of disaster prevention education but that it’s difficult for them to carry it out. Based on such situation, Oki Seminar to which the author belongs has examined the ideal way of disaster prevention education jointly with teachers.
2. Field of this Study
The field of this study is schools in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. Authors and Kawagoe City Board of Education have carried out practical disaster prevention education research jointly since 2017 fiscal year. In FY 2017 and FY 2018, we examined the effects of teacher trainings using narrative approach (Pareek, 2018; Pareek, 2019). In the 2019 fiscal year, 4 schools in Kawagoe city were made to be model schools, and we examined the changes which arose in students and teachers in the model schools.
3. Approach Method and Efforts at Model Schools
We approached both students and teachers through classes and trainings. Using data such as questionnaire surveys before and after the intervention, hearing surveys after the implementation of classes, we would examine and analyze the effects on students and teachers. In this fiscal year, the questionnaire was also carried out to the protectors of all school pupils of the model schools.
Teachers who observed the classes of the authors carried out the class in their own grade. The class carried out by the teachers was arranged based on character of the children. It’s a teachers' own strength and we authors do not have that. In addition, the approach which took in the new teaching guideline of the next fiscal year was also introduced such as incorporating disaster prevention in the science class. In the training for teachers, some teachers pointed out that it was necessary to reexamine the ideal way of the current training, which indicates that teachers' consciousness has been changing.
4. Report from Model Schools
The principals of the model schools said that there was a scene in which the consciousness of disaster prevention was improved even in the daily life such as not only the initial action in the training greatly changed, but also the conversation on earthquake and past disaster increased. In addition, it has been reported that teachers became eager to verify the teaching method of safety education. There were many teachers who began to have the question to the evacuation training which merely followed the content of the previous fiscal year.
5. Future Prospect
In the fiscal year end, we will confirm the details of the changes which arose for children, teachers and parents. And, from the 2019 fiscal year, it became possible to carry out the investigation to the schools other than the model schools. We will investigate what kind of effects the challenge of the model schools gives to other schools and will also verify the way to spread disaster prevention education.
