Oceanography plays a major role in Earth and Planetary Sciences, but it is not well recognized nor understood among the general public due to few opportunities of learning oceanography at primary-high schools and universities. Give this situation, the Oceanographic Society of Japan (JOS) has initiated a school visit program on oceanography since 2016, by dispatching ocean science professionals to schools and public facilities in order to improve ocean literacy. To date, 40 lectures have been carried out nationwide, involving a wide variety of subjects related to school teaching materials and cutting-edge ocean science. Since 2018, JOS has collaborated with The Japan Science Society (JSS) to accept their school visit program on “Cubic Earth”. In addition, the JOS has performed several outreach activities in the relevant public events. These domestic activities are also expected to contribute to both the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) from the perspective of ocean education. In this presentation, we will introduce outreach activities in oceanography such as school visits of ocean science and the Cubic Earth.
