The recent years have observed an increase in the temperatures globally which poses serious concern to the environment. India, being a developing country is already suffering from various chronic stresses like traffic congestion, pollution, poverty, improper sanitation facilities, non-renewable wastes and increasing informal settlements. Above all these pressures, extreme weather events like sea level rise, heat waves, flooding, cyclone etc occurring due to climate change only add to the miseries of urban problems and make development difficult to achieve. These disasters result in loss of infrastructure, lives, property, and livelihood and also leave a psychological impact on the survivors for a long period of time. The socio-economically weaker sections with lack of resources and skills are usually the ones severely affected due to the adverse affects of climate change. This paper intends to outline the impact of climate change on socio economic sector of the society in Indian cities and find out some mitigation measures at local level to reduce the impact of climate change.
