[HGG01-06] When did Tohoku region become the rice production area?

*Toru Sasaki1 (1.Miyagi University of Education)

Keywords:Tohoku Region, Rice Production Area, Resource Supply Area

When has Tohoku region been recognized as a rice-producing area? Because rice is a subtropical crop, it was not suitable for cultivation anywhere in Japan. In particular, the Tohoku region was unsuitable for rice production. In the Meiji period, rice cultivation was fully developed in Tohoku region, where rice cultivation was considered unsuitable. However, Tohoku has been recognized as a region that supplies food resources, despite the lack of stable production due to a series of poor harvests. This report considers that the Tohoku region was established as a rice production area after production adjustment. In this time, I introduce the perspective of changing characteristics from resource supply area.
